THE Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, on Thursday announced the release of 25 prisoners and had others’ jail term reduced, including converting death sentences to life imprisonment.
El-Rufai also advised Nigerians to reflect “on governance and how powers and responsibilities are devolved between the states and the Federal Government.”
He said, “As we mark the diamond jubilee of our country’s freedom, it is customary that we extend a gesture of mercy to some persons that are serving their sentences in prisons within Kaduna State.
“Based on this decision, 25 convicts are to be released, while others have had their sentences reduced, including converting of death sentences for some convicted armed robbers to life imprisonment.”
In a related development, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State on Thursday granted pardon to five convicts, including a man, identified as Obinna John, who was sentenced to death by hanging.
According to the governor, John, who had already served eight years in prison would have his death sentence commuted to 21 years imprisonment, while the other four convicts were granted absolute pardon.
